Travel Accident Insurance If you suffer a loss as a result of an accidental bodily injury while occupying a common carrier, you are eligible for this coverage. Car Rental Insurance If your rental vehicle is damaged or stolen while rented out in your name, you are covered up to the vehicle’s actual cash value plus valid loss of use charges. Purchase Security Automatically protects new purchases by insuring them for 90 days from the date of purchase in the event of loss, theft or damage. Extended Warranty Either doubles the length of the item’s manufacturer’s warranty coverage or extends it by 1 year—whichever is lesser. Trip Cancellation If you have to cancel your trip before it has even started, your prepaid travel costs will be covered up to a maximum amount if the cause of cancellation is eligible for the insurance. Price Protection If, within a certain amount of time of purchasing an item, its price drops or you find an identical item offered for a lower retail price than what you paid, you will be reimbursed for the difference.

Trip Interruption & Delay If your trip has to be cut short or is delayed after the scheduled departure date, you will be covered up to a maximum amount if the cause of interruption or delay is eligible for the insurance. Flight Delay If your departing flight is delayed by a certain number of hours, you will be reimbursed up to a certain amount for necessary and reasonable expenses incurred during the delay. Travel Medical Emergency In the event that you require urgent medical care while on a trip outside of your home province, you will be covered for any eligible medical expenses incurred. Lost Baggage In the event that your checked baggage cannot be located by a common carrier, you will be reimbursed for a portion of the replacement cost of lost personal property. Delayed Baggage If your checked baggage is not delivered within a specified time frame from the time of your arrival at your destination, you will be reimbursed for the cost to replace essential items. Hotel/Motel Burglary If, while you are checked in, your personal property is stolen from your hotel/motel room and there is evidence of forceful entry, you will be reimbursed for the stolen property up to a certain amount.

Travel Accident Insurance

If you, your spouse, or your dependent child under age 23 sustain any of the losses below while riding as passengers in, or boarding or exiting from a common carrier (plane,train, bus or ship), you are eligible for the corresponding benefit amount.

Supplementary Cardmembers, their spouses and dependent children under age 23 are also covered.

Coverage applies when you charge the fare for the common carrier to your American Express AeroplanPlus Gold Card. The maximum benefit payable for loss resulting from any one occurrence is $500,000.

Limitations & Exclusions

This policy does not cover any loss caused or contributed to by:

  • Suicide or intentionally self-inflicted injury by the covered person, or any attempt thereat, while sane or insane
  • War or any act of war, whether declared or undeclared
  • Committing or aiding and abetting in committing an offense under the Criminal Code of Canada or the laws of another country, or any attempt thereat, by or on behalf of the covered person or his or her beneficiaries
  • Injury sustained while serving as an operator or crew member of any conveyance
  • Injury received while driving, riding as a passenger in, boarding or exiting from a rental vehicle
  • The covered person taking any alcohol, drug, medication, gas or poison unless taken as prescribed by a physician
  • Directly or indirectly, the actual, alleged or threatened discharge, dispersal, seepage, migration, escape, release of or exposure to any hazardous biological, chemical, nuclear or radioactive material, gas, matter or contamination


How to Make a Claim

  • Call ACE INA Life Insurance at 1-877-777-1544 immediately or as soon as reasonably possible.
  • Written notice of claim must be given within 30 days of the occurrence of any loss. Benefits will be paid upon their receipt of due written proof of loss.
  • All action or proceeding against an insurer for the recovery of insurance money is absolutely barred unless commenced within the time set out in the Insurance Act (B.C. and Alberta), otherwise within 1 year of the occurrence of any loss.

Car Rental Insurance

If your rental vehicle is damaged or stolen while rented out in your name, you are covered up to the vehicle’s actual cash value plus any valid loss of use charges resulting from the damage or theft.

You are eligible for this type of coverage provided that:

  • The full cost of the rental car including applicable taxes is charged to your American Express AeroplanPlus Gold Card and/or using your earned rewards points
  • You rent the car in your name and you decline the rental agency’s collision damage waiver (CDW) or equivalent offering
  • The length of the rental period doesn’t exceed 48 consecutive days


What Types of Rental Vehicles Are Covered?

You are covered for any rental vehicle, in its model year, with a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) under $85,000, excluding all taxes.

  • Off-road vehicles (any vehicle used on roads that aren’t maintained by a public authority)
  • Motorcycles, mopeds or motorbikes
  • Trailers, campers, recreational vehicles or vehicles not licensed for road use
  • Vehicles towing or propelling trailers or any other object
  • Mini-buses or buses
  • Exotic vehicles
  • Any vehicle which is either wholly or in part handmade, hand finished or has a limited production of under 2,000 vehicles per year
  • Antique vehicles (over 20 years old or have not been manufactured for 10 years or more)
  • Tax-free cars


Limitations & Exclusions

This insurance does not cover losses arising from, caused by, or which contributed to:

  • Third party liability
  • Damages or expenses assumed, waived, or that may be paid by the rental agency, or by its insurer
  • Personal injury or damage to property, except the rental car itself or its equipment
  • Replacement vehicle for which a car insurance is covering all or part of the cost of the rental
  • Operation of the rental vehicle at any time while the driver is intoxicated or under the influence of any illegal or prescribed (if advised not to operate a vehicle) narcotic
  • Any dishonest,fraudulent or criminal act committed by any eligible person or at their direction
  • Participation in any race or speed test
  • Use of a fuel type or octane level that differs from the manufacturer’s recommended fuel for that rental vehicle
  • Normal wear and tear, gradual deterioration, or mechanical or electrical breakdown or failure, inherent vice or damage, insects or vermin
  • Operation of the rental vehicle in violation of the terms of the rental agreement
  • Seizure or destruction under a quarantine or customs regulations or confiscation by order of any government or public authority
  • Transportation of contraband or illegal trade
  • War, hostile or warlike action, insurrection, rebellion, revolution, civil war, usurped power, or action taken by government or public authority in hindering, combating or defending against such action
  • Transportation of property or passengers for hire
  • Nuclear reaction, nuclear radiation, or radioactive contamination, any weapon of war employing atomic fission or a radioactive force
  • Intentional damage to the rental vehicle by an eligible person or at their direction
  • The loss, damage or misplacement of vehicle entry devices including keys and remote control devices or any related consequential loss, damage or expense


How to Make a Claim

Call the Insurance Centre for American Express at 1-800-243-0198 within 48 hours of the theft, loss or damage occurring.

If you are making a claim, it must be submitted within 45 days of discovering the theft, loss or damage, and must include following:

  • Statement(s) if requested
  • Sales draft showing that the rental vehicle was paid for in full with your American Express AeroplanPlus Gold Card and/or using your earned rewards points
  • A copy of both sides of the rental agreement
  • The accident or damage report, if available
  • The itemized repair bill
  • The receipt for paid repairs
  • The police report, when available
  • A copy of the billing or pre-billing statement if any repair charges were billed to your account

Purchase Security

This plan automatically insures most new items purchased anywhere in the world for 90 days from the date of purchase. If the item is stolen or damaged, it will be replaced, repaired, or you will be reimbursed up to the item's purchase price.

Note: Valid claims will be settled, at the insurer's sole option, either by replacing, repairing or rebuilding the item, or by cash payment in an amount not exceeding the purchase price of the item.


Limitations & Exclusions

There will be no payment under this policy for any loss arising from the following:

  • Wear and tear
  • Theft of items attached to or carried by or in a motor vehicle
  • Mysterious disappearance, lost items
  • Inherent product defects, faulty material or workmanship
  • War, invasion, hostilities, rebellion, insurrection
  • Confiscation by order of any government or public authority
  • Risks of contraband or losses arising from illegal activity or acts
  • Flood and earthquake
  • Radioactive contamination

There is no payment under the policy for the loss of:

  • Cash or its equivalent, travellers cheques, tickets and any other negotiable instruments
  • Animals or living plants
  • Consumable goods
  • Perishable goods such as food and liquor
  • Items left behind
  • Ancillary costs incurred in respect of an insured item and not forming part of the purchase price
  • Jewellery and watches in baggage unless carried by hand and under your personal supervision
  • Motorized vehicles
  • Property solely used and pertaining to a business, profession or occupation
  • Property as a result of deliberate physical abuse to the property, excluding vandalism
  • Property which was procured illegally
  • Where you knowingly make a false or fraudulent claim


How to Make a Claim

  • Call the Insurance Centre for American Express at 1-800-243-0198 within 48 hours of the theft, loss or damage occurring
  • You must submit your claim with as much documentation as possible within 30 days of the loss occurring
  • The following claim documentation is required:
    • Original purchase receipt for item being claimed
    • Statement showing purchase
    • If claim is due to damage, a repair estimate or note from repair facility stating irreparable
    • If claim is due to damage and damage is visible, pictures of the damaged items
    • Homeowner’s policy showing amount of deductible
    • If claim is due to theft, a copy ofthe police report

Extended Warranty

When you charge the entire purchase price of an item to your card, this insurance plan either doubles the length of the item’s manufacturer’s warranty coverage or extends it by 1 year—whichever is lesser.

Coverage is provided for product malfunction, defect or damage covered by the terms of the item’s original manufacturer’s warranty and it applies only to items with warranties of 5 years or less that are eligible in Canada or the U.S.

Note: Valid claims will be settled either by replacing, repairing or rebuilding the item, or by cash payment in an amount not exceeding the purchase price of the item.


Limitations & Exclusions

There will be no coverage or entitlement to benefits under this Certificate for loss arising from the following:

  • Any physical damage, including damage as a direct result of natural disaster or a power surge, except to the extent the original manufacturer’s warranty covers such damage
  • Occurrences caused by any of the following:
    • Fraud
    • Abuse
    • War or hostilities of any kind (e.g. invasion, rebellion insurrection)
    • Confiscation by order of any government, public authority, or customs official
    • Risk of contraband
    • Illegal activity or acts
    • Radioactive contamination
  • Negligence
  • Improper installation or alteration
  • Ancillary costs incurred in respect of an item and not forming part of the purchase price
  • Inherent product defects
  • Mechanical failure or product defects covered under product recall
  • All occurrences that take place outside the coverage period

There is no coverage or entitlement to benefits for the following:

  • Products with manufacturer’s warranties not valid in Canada or the United States
  • Products which, at the time of purchase, are used, rebuilt, refurbished or remanufactured, including demos
  • Products covered by an unconditional satisfaction guarantee
  • Motorized vehicles (such as cars, trucks, motorcycles, boats, airplanes) and their parts
  • Motorized devices and their parts used for agriculture, landscaping, demolition or construction
  • Improvements or upgrades to a residential or commercial property, including but not limited to permanently affixed goods
  • Business fixtures including but not limited to air conditioners, refrigerators, heaters
  • Loss or damage to electrical appliances or devices of any kind (including wiring) when loss or damage is due to electrical currents artificially generated
  • Land or buildings
  • Jewellery
  • Consumable or perishable items
  • Animals or living plants
  • One of a kind products which cannot be replaced
  • Business property including but not limited to inventory, items purchased for resale or items that would form part of a sellable product
  • Sports equipment and goods where the loss or damage is due to the use thereof
  • Products with manufacturer’s warranties lasting more than five years


How to Make a Claim

You must report your claim within 30 days from the date of any occurrence. It's important to remember to retain all receipts and the original manufacturer’s warranty for the item(s) until the claim process is complete. You may also be asked to obtain a repair estimate.

  • To make a claim, call the Insurance Centre for American Express at 1-800-243-0198
  • To submit a claim, the following documentation is required:
  • the original sales receipt
  • the corresponding Amex Bank of Canada account statement
  • the original manufacturer’s warranty
  • They will decide whether to have the item repaired, rebuilt or replaced, or to reimburse you up to the amount charged to the Card, and not more than the original purchase price
  • You must provide all requested documentation within 60 days from the date of the occurrence to remain eligible for benefits
  • For some claims, you may be required to send in the damaged item (within 30 days), at your own expense, for further evaluation of your claim

Flight Delay

If your scheduled departure from any airport is delayed for 4 hours or more, or you are denied boarding due to overbooking and no alternative transportation is made available to you within 4 hours of the scheduled departure, you will be reimbursed up to $500 per insured person for necessary and reasonable expenses incurred within 48 hours of the delay or denied boarding, for meals, accommodation and other sundry items.

This coverage also applies for necessary and reasonable expenses incurred within 48 hours due to a missed connecting flight or a delay of your incoming flight, where no alternative onward transportation is made available to you within 4 hours.

Coverage applies only when the full fare of the ticket is charged to your American Express AeroplanPlus Gold Card and/or paid for using your earned rewards points.

Note: The maximum aggregate limit under the flight delay and baggage delay coverages is $500.


Limitations & Exclusions

This insurance does not cover loss of any kind caused by:

  • Alternate travel arrangements made by the insured person such as a taxi, limo, bus or the purchase of an airline ticket
  • Failure of any device to correctly read or interpret date/time data
  • Any illegal activity, fraud, criminal activity, committed by or attempted by an insured person
  • Any act of war, whether declared or undeclared, hostile or warlike action, insurrection, rebellion, revolution, civil war, usurped power, or action taken by government or public authority in hindering, combating or defending against such action
  • Terrorism, meaning any ideologically motivated unlawful act(s)
  • Nuclear reaction, nuclear radiation, or radioactive contamination, any weapon of war employing atomic fission or a radioactive force

You will be required to provide the following documentation within 90 days of the delay:

  • Itemized original receipts for actual expenses incurred
  • A copy of the travel agent’s invoice/itinerary
  • A copy of the account statement showing the full fare expense charged to your card and/or paid for through the redemption of rewards points
  • Alternate boarding pass or flight delay report from the airline

Lost Baggage Insurance

When you fully charge your airline tickets to your American Express AeroplanPlus Gold Card, you will be reimbursed up to $500 for loss or damage to your checked baggage or personal effects while in transit.

The maximum payable for any one occurrence is up to $500 for all insured persons combined. Of the limit coverage, jewellery is limited to no more than $300 per occurrence and no more than $250 per occurrence will apply to golf clubs, including golf bags.


Limitations & Exclusions

Coverage is not provided for loss of, or damage to, the following:

  • Contact lenses, eyeglasses, sunglasses, artificial teeth and limbs
  • Any device used to record images and/or sound and its equipment and accessories
  • Any electronics including laptops, iPods, MP3 players and cell phones
  • Sports equipment (except golf clubs and golf bags; skis, ski poles and ski boots; and racquets)
  • Statuary, paintings, china or glass objects
  • Objects of art or antiques
  • Household effects and items pertaining to business
  • Perishable items
  • Animals and furs
  • Cash, securities, bullion, negotiable property, tickets and valuable papers and documents

This insurance does not cover loss of any kind caused directly or indirectly by:

  • Any illegal activity, fraud, or criminal activity, committed by or attempted by an insured person
  • Any act of war, whether declared or undeclared, hostile or war like action, insurrection, rebellion, revolution, civil war, usurped power, or action taken by government or public authority in hindering, combating or defending against such action
  • Terrorism, meaning any ideologically motivated unlawful act(s)
  • Nuclear reaction, nuclear radiation, or radioactive contamination, any weapon of war employing atomic fission or a radioactive force


How to Make a Claim

You will be required to provide the following documentation:

  • A copy of the invoice/itinerary
  • A copy of the account statement showing the full fare expense charged to your card and/or paid for through the redemption of rewards points
  • A copy of the lost or damaged baggage report filed with the airline which includes the completed claim form itemizing the baggage’s contents
  • Proof of settlement from the insured person’s personal insurance company
  • Proof of settlement from the airline company
  • Estimate of repair (for damaged baggage/contents) or a note from the repair facility stating not repairable
  • Itemized original receipts for replacement items (if not repairable)

Delayed Baggage Insurance

If you book a flight using your American Express AeroplanPlus Gold Card, you will receive coverage up to $500 per insured person for all immediate reasonable and necessary emergency expenses incurred for essential clothing, toiletries and other sundry items when your checked baggage on your outbound trip is delayed by 6 hours or more.

Essential items must be purchased before your checked luggage is returned and no later than 4 days (96 hours) after you've arrived at the final destination.

Coverage applies only when the full fare of the ticket is charged to your American Express AeroplanPlus Gold Card and/or paid for using your earned rewards points.

Note: The maximum aggregate limit under the flight delay and baggage delay coverages is $500.


Exclusions

This insurance does not cover loss of any kind caused directly or indirectly by:

  • Baggage delay as a result of a flight that is returning to your place of residence (not outbound)
  • Any illegal activity, fraud, criminal activity, committed by or attempted by an insured person
  • Any act of war, whether declared or undeclared, hostile or warlike action, insurrection, rebellion, revolution, civil war, usurped power, or action taken by government or public authority in hindering, combating or defending against such action
  • Terrorism, meaning any ideologically motivated unlawful act(s)
  • Nuclear reaction, nuclear radiation, or radioactive contamination, any weapon of war employing atomic fission or a radioactive force

You will be required to provide the following documentation within 90 days of the delay:

  • Itemized original receipts for actual expenses incurred
  • A copy of the travel agent’s invoice/itinerary
  • A copy of the account statement showing the full fare expense charged to your card and/or paid for through the redemption of rewards points
  • Verification from the airline of the delay including reason, duration of delay, and any compensation issued
  • Proof of delivery confirming the date and time your baggage was delivered

Hotel/Motel Burglary Insurance

If, while you are registered as a guest of a hotel/motel, your personal property is damaged or stolen from your room and there are visible signs of forceful entry, you will be reimbursed up to $500 per person for the loss of personal items (excluding cash).

Note: Coverage applies only when the full cost of the hotel/motel room has been charged to your American Express AeroplanPlus Gold Card.

This insurance does not cover loss of any kind caused directly or indirectly by:

  • Any illegal activity, fraud, criminal activity, committed by or attempted by an insured person

How to Make a Claim

You must take all reasonable steps to protect, save or recover your property. In the event of a burglary, you must promptly notify either the police or other proper authority. An official letter from hotel/motel must be sent in writing to validate the claim.

You will be required to provide the following documentation within 90 days of the burglary:

  • Invoice issued by the hotel/motel
  • A copy of the account statement showing the full cost of the hotel/motel charged to your card
  • A police report confirming forced entry and a hotel/motel burglary report
  • Receipts for repaired or replaced items
