Travel Accident Insurance If you suffer a loss as a result of an accidental bodily injury while occupying a common carrier, you are eligible for this coverage. If your rental vehicle is damaged or stolen while rented out in your name, you are covered up to the vehicle’s actual cash value plus valid loss of use charges. Purchase Security Automatically protects new purchases by insuring them for 90 days from the date of purchase in the event of loss, theft or damage. Extended Warranty Either doubles the length of the item’s manufacturer’s warranty coverage or extends it by 1 year—whichever is lesser. Trip Cancellation If you have to cancel your trip before it has even started, your prepaid travel costs will be covered up to a maximum amount if the cause of cancellation is eligible for the insurance. Price Protection If, within a certain amount of time of purchasing an item, its price drops or you find an identical item offered for a lower retail price than what you paid, you will be reimbursed for the difference.

Trip Interruption & Delay If your trip has to be cut short or is delayed after the scheduled departure date, you will be covered up to a maximum amount if the cause of interruption or delay is eligible for the insurance. Flight Delay If your departing flight is delayed by a certain number of hours, you will be reimbursed up to a certain amount for necessary and reasonable expenses incurred during the delay. Travel Medical Emergency In the event that you require urgent medical care while on a trip outside of your home province, you will be covered for any eligible medical expenses incurred. Lost Baggage In the event that your checked baggage cannot be located by a common carrier, you will be reimbursed for a portion of the replacement cost of lost personal property. Delayed Baggage If your checked baggage is not delivered within a specified time frame from the time of your arrival at your destination, you will be reimbursed for the cost to replace essential items. Hotel/Motel Burglary If, while you are checked in, your personal property is stolen from your hotel/motel room and there is evidence of forceful entry, you will be reimbursed for the stolen property up to a certain amount.

Travel Accident Insurance

This plan automatically insures you, your spouse and your dependent child(ren) up to a maximum benefit amount of $500,000 against accidental loss of life, limb, sight, speech or hearing while riding as a passenger in, entering or exiting any licensed common carrier.

The entire cost of the ticket must be charged to your account and/or paid for with Capital One reward miles, and the loss must occur within 1 year of the accident in order for benefits to be paid.

If the entire cost of the ticket has been charged to your account before departure for the airport, terminal or station, coverage is also provided

  • for common carrier travel, immediately, preceding your departure, directly to the airport, terminal or station
  • while at the airport, terminal or station
  • for common carrier travel immediately following your arrival at the airport, terminal or station of your destination


Benefits

The full benefit amount ($250,000) is payable for the accidental loss of:
• Life
• Two or more members
• Sight of both eyes
• Speech and hearing
• Any combination of the above

One half of the benefit amount ($125,000) is payable for the accidental loss of:
• One member
• Sight of one eye
• Speech
• Hearing

One quarter of the benefit amount ($62,500) is payable for the accidental loss of the thumb and index finger of the same hand.

In the event of multiple accidental deaths per account arising from any one accident, the insurer’s liability for all such losses will be limited to a maximum limit of insurance equal to 3 times the applicable benefit amount for loss of life. Benefits will be proportionately divided among the insured persons up to the maximum limit of insurance.


Limitations & Exclusions

This insurance does not cover loss resulting from:

  • An insured person’s emotional trauma, mental or physical illness, disease, pregnancy, childbirth or miscarriage, bacterial or viral infection, or bodily malfunctions
  • Suicide, attempted suicide or intentionally self-inflicted injuries
  • Declared or undeclared war, not including acts of terrorism
  • Commutation (which is defined as travel between the insured person’s permanent residence and regular place of employment)
  • Any accident occurring while an insured person is in, entering or exiting any aircraft while acting or training as a pilot or crew member


How to Make a Claim

Call the insurer at 1-866-224-0178 immediately or as soon as reasonably possible to file a claim.

You may be asked to provide one or more of the following:

  • A copy of the invoice showing your Capital One MasterCard as the method of payment
  • Certified death certificate
  • Medical records pertaining to the Accident
  • Police report or any other accident reports filed

Car Rental Insurance

Charge the full cost of your car rental to your Capital One card and decline the collision damage waiver insurance offered by the rental agency (you could save $20-$30 per day) and you’ll be insured if your rental car is damaged or stolen when you rent the car for a period of up to 31 days.


Eligibility

If your rental vehicle is damaged or stolen while rented out in your name, you are covered up to the vehicle’s actual cash value plus any valid loss of use charges, reasonable towing charges and administration charges resulting from the damage or theft.

You are eligible for this type of coverage provided that:

  • You rent the car in your name and the full cost of the rental is charged your account and/or paid with your Capital One reward miles
  • You declined the rental agency’s collision damage waiver (CDW) or similar provision
  • The length of the rental period doesn’t exceed 31 consecutive days


What Types of Rental Vehicles Are Covered?

  • Antique vehicles (over 20 years old or haven't been manufactured for 10 years or more)
  • Leased vehicles


Limitations & Exclusions

This insurance does not cover any loss caused or contributed to by:

  • Operation of the rental vehicle in violation of the law or any terms and conditions of the rental agreement
  • Operation of the vehicle by any driver not so authorized
  • Operation of the vehicle by any driver not in possession of a driver's license that is valid in the rental jurisdiction
  • Operation of the vehicle on other than regularly maintained roads
  • Alcohol intoxication where the driver’s blood alcohol concentration is equal to or over the blood alcohol concentration limit for impaired driving under the Criminal Code of Canada or the jurisdiction in which the vehicle rental occurred, if lower, or the driver is charged for impaired driving
  • Use of narcotic by the driver
  • Nuclear reaction, radiation or radioactive contamination
  • Damage to tires unless in conjunction with an insured cause
  • Wear and tear, gradual deterioration, or mechanical breakdown of the vehicle
  • Any damage caused by moving or transporting cargo
  • Insects or vermin, inherent vice or damage
  • Hostile or warlike action, insurrection, rebellion, revolution or civil war
  • Seizure or destruction under quarantine or customer regulations, confiscation by order of any government or public authority
  • Transportation of contraband or illegal trade
  • Transportation of property or passengers for hire
  • Any dishonest, fraudulent or criminal act committed by the insured person and/or any authorized driver

Benefits do not include coverage for:

  • Vehicles rented for a period that exceeds 31 consecutive days, whether or not under one or more consecutive rental agreements
  • A replacement vehicle for which your personal automobile insurance, car dealer, repair shop, or other party is covering all or part of the rental cost
  • Loss or theft of personal belongings in the vehicle, including cell phones, portable computers, electronic and communication devices
  • Expenses assumed waived or paid or payable by the rental agency or its insurer
  • Third party liability (injury to anyone or anything inside or outside the vehicle)
  • Any amount payable by your employer or employer's insurance coverage, if the rental car was for business purposes


Helpful Hints

  • Before you rent a vehicle, confirm that the rental agency allows you to decline the collision damage waiver without having to make a deposit
  • Check the rental car carefully for scratches, dents or any other damages before you take possession of the car and make sure you notify the rental agency’s rep. of your findings. Have them note the damage on the rental agreement
  • If the vehicle sustains damage of any kind, immediately phone the insurer. Advise the rental agent that you have reported the claim and provide the insurer’s address and phone number. Do not sign a blank sales draft to cover the damage and loss of use charges.


How to Make a Claim

You must report a claim to the insurer at 1-866-224-0178 as soon as possible, and in all events within 48 hours of the damage or theft having occurred. Failure to report a claim within 48 hours may result in denial of the claim or reduction of your benefit.

A customer service representative will take down some preliminary information, answer any questions you may have, and forward you a claim form.

You will be required to submit a completed claim form including the following documentation:

  • A copy of the driver’s license of the person who was driving the vehicle at the time of the accident
  • A copy of the loss/damage report you completed with the rental agency
  • A copy of a police report required when the loss results in damage or theft over $1,000
  • A copy of your sales receipt, and your account statement showing the rental charge and/ or Capital One reward mile redemption
  • The front and back of the original opened and closed-out rental agreement
  • A copy of the itemized repair estimate, final itemized repair bill and parts invoices
  • Original receipt(s) for any repairs for which you may have paid
  • If loss of use is charged, a copy of the rental agency’s complete daily utilization log from the date the vehicle was not available for rental, to the date the vehicle became available to rent

Purchase Security

Most personal items purchased are automatically insured against theft, loss or damage anywhere in the world for 120 days from the date of purchase when the full cost of the item is charged to your Capital One card.

Covered items will be replaced or repaired or the purchase price will be reimbursed at the insurance company’s discretion.

Note: There is a maximum lifetime liability of $60,000 per account under the purchase security and extended warranty coverages.


Limitations & Exclusions

The following items are not covered by this plan:

  • Travellers cheques, cash (whether paper or coin), bullion, precious metals, tickets, documents, stamps, negotiable instruments or propery of a similar nature
  • Animals or living plants
  • Golf balls or other sports equipment lost or damaged during the course of normal use
  • Mail order, Internet, telephone purchases or any other purchase being shipped until delivered and accepted by you in new and undamaged condition
  • Automobiles, motorboats, airplanes, motorcycles, motor scooters, snowblowers, riding lawn mowers, golf carts, lawn tractors, any other motorized vehicles (except for miniature electrically powered vehicles intended for recreational use by children), or any of their respective parts or accessories
  • Perishables such as food, liquor and/or goods consumed in use
  • Jewellery and gems stored in baggage unless such baggage is hand carried under the personal supervision of the cardholder or such cardholder’s travelling companion with the cardholder’s knowledge
  • Used or previously owned or refurbished items, including antiques, collectibles and fine arts
  • Items purchased by and/or used for a business or commercial gain
  • Losses caused by or resulting from fraud, misuse or lack of care, improper installation, hostilities of any kind (including war, terrorism, invasion, rebellion or insurrection), confiscation by authorities, risks of contraband, illegal activities, normal wear or tear, flood, earthquake, radioactive contamination, mysterious disappearance, or inherent product defects
  • Bodily injury, property damage, consequential damages, punitive damages, exemplary damages and legal fees
  • Services, including delivery and transportation costs of items purchased


How to Make a Claim

Call the insurer at 1-866-224-0178 immediately after learning of any loss or occurrence. You will be sent the applicable claim form(s). Your failure to provide proof of loss within 90 days from the date of loss or damage may result in denial of the related claim.

You must obtain the insurer's approval before proceeding with any repair services in order to ensure the eligibility for payment of your claim.

You must complete and sign the claim form which must contain the time, place, cause and amount of loss, and include the following:

  • The customer copy of your sales receipt and a copy of the account statement showing the charge and/or Capital One reward mile redemption
  • The original vendor’s sales receipt
  • A police, fire, insurance claim or loss report and/or other report of the occurrence of the loss sufficient for determination of eligibility for the benefits

Note: If the claim is for a gift, it must be made by the account holder, not the recipient.

Extended Warranty

When you use your Capital One card to purchase most personal items (and the full cost of the item is charged to your card and/or paid for with Capital One reward miles), Extended Warranty coverage automatically doubles the original manufacturer’s warranty for up to two years.

This coverage applies automatically to items with warranties that are 5 years or less.

Extended warranty benefits apply to any parts and/or labour costs resulting from mechanical breakdown or failure of a covered item, where such obligation was specifically covered under the terms of the original manufacturer’s warranty.

In addition, extended warranty benefits are limited to the lesser of the cost to repair or replace or the original purchase price of the eligible item, including applicable taxes.

Note: There is a maximum lifetime liability of $60,000 per account under the purchase security and extended warranty coverages.

The following items are not covered by this plan:

  • Aircraft, automobiles, motorboats, motorcycles, motor scooters, snowblowers, snowmobiles, riding lawn mowers, golf carts, lawn tractors, or any other motorized vehicles (except for miniature electrically powered vehicles intended for recreational use by children), or any of their respective parts or accessories
  • Services
  • Items purchased by and/or used for a business or commercial gain
  • Bodily injury, property damage, consequential damages, punitive damages, exemplary damages or aggravated damages and legal fees

Price Protection

When you use your Capital One card to buy a new item in Canada that is offered for sale at a lower price within 60 days of purchase, Price Protection Service pays you the difference up to $100 per item and $500 per calendar year.

This insurance is available only to the Cardmember and applies only to items purchased in Canada that were paid for in full with your Capital One MasterCard and/or with your Capital One reward miles.

The insurer will decide to either:

  • buy back the original eligible item from you at the original price, provided you, after receiving authorization, purchase the identical lower priced item, charged in full to your account; or
  • pay you the price difference between the original eligible item and the identical lower priced item


Limitations & Exclusions

Price protection services are subject to the following limitations:

  • Payment is based on the price of the item before applicable taxes, manufacturer's rebate, store rebates, and shipping and installation charges
  • No payments will be made for price differences of less than $10 per item
  • Maximum payment will be $100 per item up to a maximum of $500 per account per calendar year
  • This service applies to a maximum of 3 identical items during the 60-day period
  • No item can be submitted for reimbursement more than once during the 60-day period
  • Price comparisons with liquidated merchadise, grey market (internet) items and gift card or savings card incentives are not eligible

Price protection service is not available in respect of the following:

  • Traveller’s cheques, cash (whether paper or coin), bullion, precious metals, tickets, documents, stamps,negotiable instruments or property of a similar nature
  • Animals, living plants or perishables such as food and liquor and/or goods consumed in use
  • Computers (including hardware, software, printers and scanners), cellular phones, personal digital assistants (PDA) or any similar electronic device
  • Automobiles, motorboats, airplanes, motorcycles, motor scooters, riding lawn mowers, golf carts, lawn tractors or any other motorized vehicles (except for miniature electrically powered vehicles intended for recreational use by children), or any of their respective parts, fuels or accessories
  • One-of-a-kind items
  • Used or previously owned or refurbished items, including antiques, collectibles and fine art
  • Items purchased and/or used by or for a business or for commercial gain
  • Services related to items purchased, including insurance, duty, delivery and transportation costs


How to Make a Claim

Call 1-866-224-0178 as soon as you discover the advertised price difference. You will be sent a request form, which you will need to complete and sign, and send back within 90 days from the date of purchase.

In addition to the completed request form, you must also include the following:

  • The customer copy of your sales receipt and a copy of the account statement showing the charge and/or Capital One reward mile redemption
  • The original vendor's sales receipt
  • A dated advertisement or flyer to prove that the identical item was offered in Canada at the reduced price within 60 days of the date of your purchase

Note: If the request for payment of the price difference is for an item that was given as a gift, it must be made by the account holder, not the recipient.

Delayed Baggage Insurance

If your checked baggage is delayed for more than four hours from the time you arrive at your ticketed destination, you, your spouse and your dependent children are each eligible for reimbursement of up to $100 per day for up to three days to purchase essential items.

The Baggage Delay benefit is in excess of all other valid and collectable insurance, and applies only when the entire cost of the ticket is charged to your account and/or paid for with Capital One reward miles.

Essential items are limited to the minimum essential clothing and toiletries due to the delay of an insured person’s checked baggage.


Exclusions

Essential items not covered by this benefit include, but are not limited to:

  • contact lenses, eyeglasses or hearing aids
  • artificial teeth, dental bridges or prosthetic devices
  • tickets, documents, money, securities, cheques, traveller’s cheques and valuable papers
  • business samples

You may be asked to submit one or more of the following:

  • Itemized original receipts for actual expenses incurred
  • A copy of the baggage claim ticket
  • Verification from the common carrier of the delay including the reason for the delay
  • A copy of the invoice showing your Capital One MasterCard as the method of payment
