Ratehub’s review
Natasha Macmillan
This card is a great introduction into the world of travel rewards credit cards. The earn rate isn’t anything crazy, but it’s respectable for a no-fee card. Plus, Aventura points are valuable when applied for flights and travel, so this card would be a great option to use on booking a spring break trip or school exchange program.
Pros
- Aventura points are valuable: Aventura points are relatively valuable when booked for flights and travel at 1 point = 1 cent
- Work towards financial goals: If you are trying to manage your credit card balance or want to start investing, you can use your Aventura Points to do so with this card
Cons
- Limited redemption options: You are limited to booking what’s available in the CIBC Rewards Centre with this card, whereas with others, you can book through any provider and apply points against your purchase later
- Points are worth less on other redemptions: Your points will be worth much less for statement credits, investments and gift cards. If you’re not a big traveler, this might not be the best option for you
- Lower base earn rate: For everyday purchases that aren’t travel bookings or eligible gas, electric vehicle charging, grocery stores and drug stores—your earn rate is considerably lower. Plus, you are limited to a total annual spend of $6,000 for everyday bonus categories other than CIBC travel purchases
