Ontario Mortgage Broker Associations

In order to become a mortgage broker in Ontario, an individual needs to be licensed with the Financial Services Commission of Ontario (FSCO). To be approved for licensing, the applicant must be 18 years of age or older; be a resident of Canada; and meet education and experience requirements as determined by FSCO.

It is also possible for a potential mortgage broker to receive an Accredited Mortgage Professional (AMP) designation from the Canadian Association of Accredited Mortgage Professionals (CAAMP). The designation program is the only national proficiency standard for the Canadian Mortgage industry and although it is not mandatory, it does add additional credibility.

As of November 1, 2011, the Financial Services Commission of Ontario will require all mortgage brokers and agents to take a mandatory mortgage education re-licensing course prior to licence renewal in 2012 to fulfill educational requirements. The organizations that offer the courses are CAAMP, the Independent Mortgage Brokers Association, the Real Estate and Mortgage Institute of Canada, and Seneca College.
