5 Questions with CMP’s Top 5 Mortgage Brokers in Alberta – Skye McLean
Each year, Canadian Mortgage Professionals (CMP) Magazine publishes their Top Broker list. The list is composed of the brokers with the most funded deals in the industry. For this blog series, we’re interviewing Alberta’s top mortgage brokers and asking them what they attribute their success to.
Skye McLean from Atlantis (HS) Financial ranked 18th in 2011, after closing with over $72 million in funded deals. She has over 12 years of experience working in the financial services industry, the last 5 of which she has been a mortgage broker. McLean attributes her success as a mortgage broker to her previous experience working in a bank. To learn more about her, keep reading.
1. How can you attribute your success to making the Top 5?
Efficiency is key in my business. Getting back to clients in a timely manner and also giving them financing options that best meet their needs. Having a good database and a follow-up system to keep in touch with clients, I find, is also important. I continuously look for opportunities to cross-sell and asking for more business always helps.
2. Do you have a niche that you service?
There is no particular niche that I service. I help a broad range of customers, from new immigrants and first-time homebuyers to repeat property investors.
3. What first got you interested in the mortgage business?
I have worked in a bank since I graduated from school, and the finance industry has always interested me. While working at the bank, I really excelled in the lending side of the business. So I decided to take it one step further and I left the bank to become a mortgage broker.
4. What’s your personal mortgage product?
Since fixed rates are below the Prime-lending rate, a lot of my clients have been going with the 3- and 5-year fixed rates. The lower rate is more attractive to clients.
5. Fill in the blank. ‘If I weren’t in the mortgage business, I’d be _____.’
In investments. I am interested in finance and, besides lending, I think investments are the next best thing.
